Molina Insurance Obamacare

Is Molina Healthcare part of Obamacare?

While they provide other health insurance (like Medicaid and Medicare) we will mainly focus on the marketplace plans they offer in this article.

Like many other companies, Molina Healthcare is part of Obamacare (Affordable Care Act). It was started in 1980 and joined the ACA when it opened in 2010. They are known for being one of the cheapest health insurance options in the marketplace.

It is ranked 14th in Forbes top health insurance companies in the U.S. with over 780,000 new enrollments a couple years ago. Also, it was recognized as one of the world’s best companies just last year. So, just know that you will be joined by many others if you do decide to go with Molina!

But… does that mean they are a good choice for you?

Does Molina have good insurance plans?

There are so many factors that go into what makes a “good” insurance plan that it is a tough answer. The majority think that yes, Molina is a good insurance plan because of its affordable prices and great coverage. But again, it depends on many factors.

For example, plans are based on your location, age, household size, and income. So, it is possible that Molina may not even be in your area (and that does not mean it is not good).

Furthermore, Molina is ranked #9 for customer satisfaction and overall ranking. It is also voted for “Best for its provider network” by Insure. So it is  fair to say that they are good. But let’s dive in.

The Pros and Cons of Molina Health Insurance

Like every other health insurance company, Molina has its good and bad. While mostly viewed as positive it is important we see both sides to see if it is for you or not.

PROS CONS
They offer one of the lowest premiums in the marketplace compared to others.
Coverage is only available in under 18 states.
Good for low-income individuals and families with their Medicaid and CHIP coverage.
Limited coverage due to their network of only serving HMO plans.
Ranked No.1 for their provider network.
Limited to government-sponsored programs.
One of the leading companies in terms of customer satisfaction.

As you can see it has its ups and downs. However, it has more pros than cons, so that is always a good thing! Overall, here at Cuspide, we give Molina a 3.5 out of 5 stars! Checkout where Molina ranks amongst the top health insurers.

Keep in mind that these are just the overall statistics of the company and may not be how you experience them. Do not base your buying off reviews.

It’s important to find out if it is for you by getting a quote. There is a possibility that it is not in your area, or that it happens to not be the plan that suits you and your family the best.

What Plans Does Molina Healthcare Have

What type of insurance does Molina Healthcare offer?

When it comes to Molina you must know that they offer 3 types of health coverage (managed care plans). Molina offers Medicaid, Medicare, and health plans through the marketplace. They are all for different purposes, let’s see which one may be for you.

They also offer CHIP (Childrens Health Insurance Program) which is coverage for children and DSNP (Dual Special Needs Plans) which are specialized Medicare Advantage plans, but we will only focus on these 3 as they are the main players.

1. Molina Medicaid

They are well-known for their Medicaid plans, which provide coverage for low-income individuals and families. If Molina is in your state (more on this later), and you qualify for Medicaid, they are a great choice. Like some other types of coverage, you will get access to doctor visits, hospital care, emergencies, prescription drugs, and more.

2. Molina Medicare

One important coverage they have is Medicare Advantage plans, (Medicare Part C), which is like the original Medicare benefits. These plans include benefits like prescription drug coverage (Part D), vision, dental, and some programs to better your health. Out of the three this is the least one that you will probably pick from, but still an important product.

3. Molina Marketplace *

Molina Healthcare is part of the Obamacare/Affordable Care Act and offers many different plans (read about this later). These plans will offer many health benefits and the best part is that no matter what pre-existing conditions you have, you will never be denied coverage.

Molina marketplace plans come in different prices and coverage types. Depending on what you want from your plan will determine what kind of plan you go with.

So, what exactly will it cover and how does the coverage work? Let’s find out.

What does Molina health insurance cover?

Just like all the other health insurance companies, Molina Healthcare must provide the “10 Essential Health Benefits” to their members. What does that mean?

If you want health coverage through the marketplace you will get access to the following:

  • Preventive care
  • Emergencies
  • Prescription drugs
  • Maternity care
  • Mental health services
  • Pediatrics
  • Laboratory services
  • Rehabilitative services
  • Hospitalization
  • Ambulatory patient services

No matter what plan you choose, they will all be required to provide you with all those services. However, the difference comes in the plan itself.

Depending on which one you choose (whether it is Molina or not) it will cost you different for these services. Because they all have different deductibles, copays, out-of-pocket maximums, etc.

The Molina insurance group only sells HMO plans (Health Maintenance Organization) through the marketplace. These are the cheapest options out of the 4 types and will often be the “strictest” because of requiring a PCP to see a specialist.

So, what are your options and how do they differ?
