Tips for Finding the Best Affordable Health Insurance

With Cuspide clients only paying around $40 a month on average for their plan, we know a thing or two
about finding the most affordable health insurance.

The first step individuals and families should take is to figure out why they need health insurance. Those who require frequent medical care will not shop the same as those who want it for a just in case scenario. Plans are made for different needs and different budgets; it is not a “one size fits all.”

The most important factor when it comes to monthly cost is yearly household income. An incorrect reporting of income can lead to overpaying for health insurance. To make things simple, the less you declare, the less you will pay. The key figure to look out for is the “adjusted gross income”.

Inside the health insurance marketplace, people have the option to compare plans before they choose them. Look at all the plans offered by the different companies before deciding on one. Focus on the numbers of the premiums, deductibles, copays, and out of pocket max. Look at different plan types (HMO, EPO, PPO, etc) and decide which is the best choice.

Those applying for health insurance should always try to qualify for a subsidy (Premium Tax Credit) to lower their monthly premiums. This credit will be applied to your plan monthly and save you hundreds of dollars. To see if you qualify for these credits, check out our guide on ACA subsidies.

Our most important tip would be to contact an insurance broker to help with your marketplace enrollment. Insurance agents can help you compare plans, save money, and choose the right coverage. We also help with finding doctors, making payments, and more. Contact us at Cuspide at (305) 970-8583.

What are the Most Affordable Health Insurance Plans?

Inside the ACA/Obamacare marketplace the 3 most common plan types are HMO (Health Maintenance Organization), EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization), and PPO (Preferred Provider Organization). All of them have their pros and cons. They all differ depending on everyone’s unique needs. The cheapest plans in the marketplace are HMO and the most expensive are the PPOs, while the EPO plans are in the middle. Let’s compare:

the best affordable health insurance plans

HMO Plans

Health Maintenance Organization

HMO plans will require you to choose a primary care physician (PCP) and you need a referral from your PCP to see a specialist. Also, you can only get care in-network. HMOs generally have the lowest out-of-pocket costs and premiums compared to the other plans. The strictest out of the 3.

EPO Plans

Exclusive Provider Organization

EPO plans offer a network of healthcare providers like HMOs, but you will not need a referral to see a specialist. Like an HMO, you are required to stay within the network for coverage, except in emergencies. EPO plans have higher premiums than HMOs and lower premiums than PPOs. Balanced and flexible.

PPO Plans

Preferred Provider Organization

PPO plans offer the largest network of providers, (both in-network and out-of-network options.) Like an EPO, you can see specialists without a referral. PPO plans have the highest premiums and out-of-pocket costs compared to HMOs and EPOs but offer the most flexibility in return.

How Obamacare Marketplace Plans Work

Inside the Health Insurance Marketplace there are many plans. Each health insurance plan has 4 main factors inside: Premiums, Deductibles, Copays, and Out-Of-Pocket Maximums.

Premiums

The amount you will pay monthly in return for your health coverage that the insurance company provides. It could be high, or it could be low (depending on income and premium tax credit).

Deductibles

A fixed fee you must pay out of pocket before the insurance company starts to pay. Depending on your plan it could range from $0 to $7000+. The best plans are usually health insurance with 0 deductible.

Copays

Either a fixed amount or a percentage that you pay for things like doctor visits, prescription drugs, emergency rooms, etc.

OOPM

The Out-Of-Pocket Maximum is the total amount (limit) that you can spend on your insurance plan in a year. If this number is reached, the insurance company will cover 100% of every cost after.

Obamacare Marketplace Plan Categories

The 4 categories (metal levels) in the health insurance marketplace are Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans. Although not as popular, there is also Catastrophic (which is basically an “accidental” plan and are only for those under 30 years old). Each of the tiers has different benefits, pricing, and represents different ways that you and your insurance provider will divide the costs. Find out which one suits you best below.

Bronze

Bronze health plans have the lowest monthly premiums out of the 4 metal levels but the highest deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket max. They could be a good option for individuals and families who don’t expect frequent medical care and want to save money while having protection.

Silver *

Silver plans are the perfect balance between out-of-pocket costs and premium payments. Silver plans are the only ones who have “Cost-Sharing Reductions” built in, which can lower your deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. This is the most popular choice in the Obamacare marketplace.

Gold

With a gold plan, you will pay a higher premium for lower copays and deductibles. This is great for those who will need frequent medical care and don’t mind spending a little extra on the monthly premiums.

Platinum

Platinum plans have the highest monthly premiums but the lowest copays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses. May be a good choice for those with pre-existing conditions who expect to use medical services frequently.

People Usually Ask...

Cuspide answers the internet’s most asked questions regarding the Affordable Care Act/Obamacare.

Not everyone can qualify for ACA/Obamacare. To be eligible for a health insurance plan individuals and families must be a resident or citizen of the United States, never been to prison, and not have coverage through Medicaid or an employer. On top of that, the most important is that you must meet the minimum income needed for Obamacare (depending on applicant’s household size).

The minimum income needed to qualify for Obamacare in 2024 is $14,580. This is for a single person. The more people in the tax household, the more the minimum income rises. The average family size in the U.S. is 3 people so they would need to make at least $24,860 to receive a subsidy (premium tax credit).

If individuals and families are over the limit, they can still apply but will not get any subsidy. To qualify you must be between 100 to 400% of the Federal Poverty Line. Check out our Obamacare guide and the ACA Subsidy Chart for 2024.

One of the main features of the Affordable Care Act (besides the marketplace) was the law that made all the health insurance companies provide the 10 Essential Health Benefits. Under Obamacare, people cannot be denied care. This does not mean that these benefits are free (there are still copays, out of pocket max, etc.) No matter which plans you pick, you will be able to receive all these services:

1. Doctor visits
2. Emergency rooms
3. Hospitalization
4. Maternity and newborn care
5. Prescription drugs
6. Mental health & substance
7. Preventive care
8. Rehab & habilitation
9. Laboratory/diagnostics
10. Pediatrics

To apply for health insurance after open enrollment is over (November 1 to January 15), you must qualify for the SEP (Special Enrollment Period). This period allows you to enroll at any time during the year.

To qualify for the SEP, you must have had a major lifestyle change during the past 60 days, (getting married, having a child, divorced, coverage ended, etc). There are other things you can do so, contact Cuspide at (305) 970-8583 for more information!

A healthcare subsidy is a credit that is given by the government to individuals and families to make their marketplace plan more affordable. It is given in the form of Premium Tax Credits, and it is applied monthly to the health insurance plan. Without a subsidy, plans could cost hundreds to thousands of dollars. 4 out of 5 people will qualify for subsidized health plans.

The average cost of Obamacare (ACA) in the United States is $52 a month (with ubsidy) and $408 (without subsidy). This is just an average and does not mean this is what you will pay. Use our Obamacare calculator that tells you how much premium tax credit you will receive and what you will pay for a silver plan. The more income the household makes, the more they will pay and vice versa.

Obamacare Open Enrollment for 2024/2025 begins on November 1, 2024, and ends on February 15, 2025. During this time, individuals and families can sign up, compare and choose plans, or make any changes to their application. If you missed the OEP, you could try and qualify for the SEP (Special Enrollment Period) and apply at any time during the year.

The Affordable Care Act (known as the ACA) or Obamacare, is the law that was passed and was put into place in 2010 that gave everyone access to affordable healthcare. In 2014, the Obamacare law introduced the Health Insurance Marketplace which is where individuals and families compare and choose from many plans available. When everyone mentions “health insurance” they refer to the ACA plans.

The top 5 cheapest health insurance companies in the United States are BlueCross & BlueShield, Aetna, Kaiser Permanente, UnitedHealthcare, and Ambetter. Costs depend on many factors like income, address, household size, and what type of plan you choose.

It is possible that none of these will be the cheapest for you.  Also, some of these companies may not even be in your area. To check the most affordable health insurance near you, contact Cuspide at (305) 970-8583.
