How the Georgia Health Insurance Marketplace works

If you want to enroll for a health plan in the Peach States, it is done through the ACA marketplace. Your insurance agent will have the policy done through here. The entire process is quick and simple (if you enroll with us). When people want to sign up for Obamacare in Georgia there are 4 key things you must know:

The application process starts by getting a quote (at no cost) and comparing the many plans available in the marketplace. After you find one that suits your needs, you can go ahead and begin. A health insurance application takes around 10 minutes to complete (with an insurance agent.) After it is done, you can make the first payment (if needed) to activate the plan.

Inside the marketplace there are many plans available from different health insurance companies. The 4 types of plans available in Georgia are HMO, EPO, POS, and PPO. The 2 most popular types of plans in the marketplace are HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) and EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization). We suggest learning which type of plan is best and the differences.

One key feature of the ACA (Obamacare) is that it gives people a subsidy. A subsidy is the monthly tax credit (Premium Tax Credit) given to people to help pay for their health insurance. It is what makes your plan “affordable.” The amount you will receive all depends on your income. Contact us at Cuspide to learn more about subsidies.

There are 2 periods when you can enroll for Georgia health plans. They are the “Open Enrollment Period” and the “Special Enrollment Period”. The OEP is every year from November 1st to January 15th and this is when the marketplace is open, and anyone can apply. The SEP has some requirements to be able to qualify for it. To qualify for the Special Enrollment Period, you need to have had a recent lifestyle change (like getting married, divorced, baby, moved, etc.) in the past 60 days (about 2 months). There are some other workaround options, so feel free to contact us at Cuspide to apply!

What does Georgia Health Insurance cover?

The ACA law made insurance companies provide customers with “Essential Health Benefits.” These are services that are mandatory for all insurance companies to offer. This does NOT mean that they are free! There are still copays and coinsurance that you must pay for these services (depending on the plan chosen). The 10 benefits of health plans in Georgia are:

1. Emergencies
2. Ambulatory services
3. Hospitalization
4. Maternity services
5. Prescription drugs
6. Mental health/substances
7. Laboratory
8. Rehab
9. Pediatric services
10. Preventive care

A common choice for the Peach State residents. Oscar has cheap plans and great coverage. You can choose from either their HMO or EPO plans that they offer. One of the best when it comes to user experience for members.

Kaiser is only found in a few states and Georgia is one of them. They also have EPO and HMO plans to choose from, making them an excellent choice if you want low-cost health coverage.

Anthem is under the BlueCross & BlueShield umbrella. BCBS is one of the largest health providers in the United States. With their large network, you will always be covered with no problem.

Part of CVS Health, Aetna is one of the largest providers in the nation. Through their HMO plans they offer affordable plans in Georgia for all.

Anywhere in the United States, Ambetter is always one of the best choices when it comes to low-cost health insurance. Their EPO and HMO plans make sure that everyone gets the coverage they need.

Cigna is another big player in the health insurance world. They have a solid HMO network. Depending on your area, they will usually have cheap plans available.

CareSource is a local health insurance provider in the Peach State. Not as commonly known as some of the others but still a solid choice for coverage.

Note that one company is not better than the other. There are several factors that come into play when selecting medical insurance. A little bit of something is always better than nothing.

7 Tips on Choosing Health Insurance Plans in Georgia

We understand that getting health coverage can be tricky and that is why we want to share some advice to help you when choosing a plan. Here are some tips on how to save money on your health plan:

1. Figure out your needs

The first thing you should do is ask yourself why you want health insurance. Some people are sick and need frequent care, while others only need it in case of an emergency. These 2 types of people will not want to pay the same for their coverage. For example, a person who expects lots of medical care might want to invest a little more and get a $0 deductible plan with a low out-of-pocket maximum.

2. Correctly report income

The most key factor when it comes to monthly premiums is your income. The higher the income, the more you pay for your health insurance. That is why it is crucial to report your income correctly to the insurance agent. Remember, Obamacare is based on adjusted gross income (what is left after all your deductions.) Try your best to estimate your income (especially those with a 1099!)

3. Find out household size

The second most deciding factor on price in medical insurance is your household size. Especially dependents. Having dependents on your policy will lower your monthly premiums because you get more premium tax credit. Now, if you are planning to add a dependent, make sure your income now is enough for the minimum of however many people are in your taxes.

For example, you and your spouse have a yearly income of $19,720 (minimum for 2 people.) But you now add your child as a dependent in your policy. Your household income must now be at least $24,860 to qualify for Obamacare, even if it is just 2 people applying for coverage.

4. Learn the plan types

The 4 plan categories in the ACA marketplace are Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. These all have their differences and benefits.

Bronze
A bronze health plan is the cheapest option in the marketplace. However, it will have the highest costs when you need medical care. Perfect for those who want to save money and do not really expect to go to the doctor too much.

Silver *
The silver health plan is the most common in the ACA. This is because it has an extra cost-saving option which makes it the best choice. It has a perfect balance between low deductibles and copays and monthly cost.

Gold
A gold is more on the luxury side of plan types. Gold plans will have the lowest cost when you need to get medical care but will have significantly higher monthly premiums. If you expect to visit the doctor a lot, then this might be an excellent choice.

Platinum
Platinum health plans are rarely chosen but are the creme of the crop when it comes to copays. They are a more extreme version of a gold plan. They will have the highest premiums! We do not recommend this.

5. Know the insurance terms

The most important terms you should know (besides premiums) are deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums. A deductible is what you will have to pay out of your own pocket before the insurance company starts helping. And the OOP is the max amount (a limit) that you can pay in a year, after the insurance company covers everything. Lastly, there is a copay, which is usually the fixed amount (or percentage) that you must pay for things like prescription drugs, doctor visits, emergencies, etc.

When comparing plans, try to aim for $0 deductibles and the lowest OOP you can find. Because when it is time to get medical care, you will have to pay the least.

6. See if you qualify for a subsidy

Obviously this is out of your control (since it is based on household income) but getting a subsidized health plan should be your goal. The more premium tax credit you get, the more affordable your plan. There are a few ways you can do this, which is why we suggest contacting us at Cuspide to see if you qualify for subsidies.

7. Get professional help

The best advice we can give you is to get is to contact a licensed health insurance agent to help you with the enrollment process. If you contact an insurance agency like us, you will ALWAYS get the best price because we have partnerships with all the companies. That means when we scan the marketplace, we can always get the most affordable plan for you.

Does Georgia have free health insurance?

Yes, there are options for free health coverage in Georgia, like Medicaid, subsidized health plans or CHIP. However, not everyone will be able to get it. To qualify for these, you will need a low enough income as they are designed for low-income individuals and families.

Medicaid in Georgia

Medicaid is a government program designed for people with low income to get health coverage. Medicaid eligibility in Georgia is based on income and household size. Like Obamacare, if you qualify you will get benefits like doctor visits, emergency care, prescription drugs, and more. If you were denied Medicaid or had it cancelled, you can apply for ACA plans.

Subsidized health plans

If you want medical insurance in Georgia you must get a subsidized health plan. This means that your plan has premium tax credits applied to it, making it cheaper. To qualify for a subsidy your income needs to be close to 100% of the Federal Poverty Level. The closer you are, the lower your monthly premiums will be. Contact us at Cuspide to see how much you will get!

CHIP Insurance

CHIP (Childrens Health Insurance Program) is for those families who earn too much for Medicaid but cannot afford private health insurance (Obamacare). The downside is that this only provides coverage for the children and not the parents.

What is the Peach State Health Plan?

The Peach States Health Plan is a Medicaid Managed Care Organization (MCO) in Georgia. The best health insurance plans in Georgia are either EPO or HMOs. HMO plans are cheaper, and you have a designated primary doctor that oversees your health. EPOs on the other hand are a bit pricier but provide more flexibility (like not needing a referral to see a specialist.) They both cover in-network care only, which means that the doctor/place has a contract with the health insurance company you chose. The most popular plan types found in the ACA marketplace are EPOs and HMOs. There are also POS (Point of Service) and PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) but are not as commonly chosen.

The 5 types of health insurance options in Georgia are ACA plans, Medicaid, CHIP, Employer-Sponsored plan, and Medicare. Usually, the most common are Obamacare and Medicaid. All of these have different requirements, benefits, and costs so figure out which one suits you best. Medicaid is for families with little to no income. ACA plans (Obamacare) are for individuals and families of every income level. Contact a licensed professional (like Cuspide) to find out which coverage option is for you.

Yes, there are many PPO plans available in the Georgia health insurance marketplace. Out of the 4 types, PPOs are the most expensive option. This is because with a PPO plan, you can choose any doctor, hospital, or clinic and it does not matter whether it is in-network or out-of-network. This flexibility comes at a price. The “better” choice is an EPO plan which is like a PPO at a better price. To see the available PPO plans in Georgia, contact Cuspide at (305) 970-8583.

The average cost of Georgia health insurance is $341 without subsidy and $63 with a subsidy. This is based on the first silver plan that comes up for a 35-year-old individual with the average income. Note that it is just an average and it is different for everyone. What you pay in monthly premiums will depend on factors like income, age, household size, location, and more. The average monthly payment for a Cuspide client is around $30 a month! Make the switch today and save money on your health insurance.

The top 5 health insurance companies in Georgia are BlueCross & BlueShield, Oscar, Ambetter, Kaiser Permanente, and Aetna. They are the best options because they provide affordable plans and have a large network of care. Individuals and families looking for low cost coverage should look at one of these 5 companies. However, since location is a deciding factor, do not feel like you are getting a bad plan if none of these appear. As always, contact an insurance agent to help you!

Yes, there is Obamacare plans in Georgia (a.k.a the Affordable Care Act). Individuals and families can enroll through the Georgia health insurance marketplace. Inside Obamacare, there are many companies which offer several types of plans and benefits. It is important to make sure the marketplace is open (every year in November through January) or if you qualify for the Special Enrollment Period.
